Whither Now, Corporate Research?

Posted September 19, 2008 8:00 AM

The transistor…laser cooling…flip chip bonding…quantum cascade lasers…Bell Labs has given up basic physics research and it's the end of an era. As one who got to prowl around the frankly gorgeous Holmdel, NJ building in its heyday, I still remember that sense of excitement behind every door. I also wonder just who is going to be doing basic research as we move forward. Universities, sure, but does that mean companies are no longer going to grow their own, just buy their IP already developed (courtesy of government dollars)? Bell Labs discoveries were spun into billions of dollars in revenues and changed technology forever. I mourn it.

Whither Now, Corporate Research?
China and India?

If the old industrialised nations want to give up R&D in favour of letting accountants screw up the economy...who gives a damn?
Lets just roll over and wave our legs in the air (works for me)
Maybe we'll get some new exciting thinking.

That's what happens when the accountants and investment companies take over. They want only research with guaranteed ROI's (return on investment.) With pure research there are no guarantees, only possibilities. The more research by well funded, competent people, the more the possibilities. Looking only at the short-sighted next quarter earnings will seldom produce significant breakthroughs.

I and many others mourn along with you. I well remember the interest in science and engineering research that was generated by Bell Labs in me and my classmates from the films and live presentations they produced. No presentation by an accountant ever stirred anyone's creative juices, I'll bet! With this, we ALL lose - the whole world.
