Detaching from the Grid

Posted November 03, 2008 8:41 AM

We hear about how using compact fluorescent lighting, occupancy controls, and how tapping into alternative energy sources can help cut back on the energy bill, but what about machinery, computers, and appliances? Some appliances can even suck energy from the grid when they are not turned on. What makes an appliance energy efficient? What are the trade-offs? How do you choose the more energy efficient devices for your home and office?

This efficiency thing needs some constraints. Some of the purists (a minority, by the way) insist on striving for needless and pointless goals. I've even endured those who constantly go around saying that we need to use less energy. Poppycock! I'm entitled to use all the energy that I want to pay for. Get over it.

As to how to generate that energy, I am all for getting off the grid. Countries all over the world, except for the USA, seem to have waken up to this reality. We Americans are just as hooked on centrally generated power sources as we are on oil.

While the rest of the world is restructuring, the USA is sticking to their old ideas. This is causing the "world leader" status to slip into oblivion. I just hope the history books reflect the truth that we chose this path. More importantly, I hope we note that the reason we choose this is because we wanted to squeeze a little more out of our "infrastructure" instead of investing in new technologies. This downfall is being lead by accounts and shareholders. Damn the viability, maximize the profits!

By the way, for the rest of the world, your welcome! We enjoyed it while we had it. Maybe we'll have another chance at "world leader" in 20 or 30 years. In the mean time, its every man for themselves. This includes generating your own power.
