Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Powered by Chrysler and Eaten by Termites

Reader Don Huneke was recently cleaning out the attic and decided to send us the auto-related magazines and little books he came across in that endeavor. One of those books was "Custom Cars," one of those little Motor Trend books of the 1950s, this one specifically from 1951. And in that book, toward the end, we came across this photo of a teardrop-type car with a very cryptic caption. So anybody wanna fill in the details on this Chrysler-powered wood-bodied teardrop car?

It looks like their version of the car, can't recall the name, that Bucky Fuller designed. I don't think it was the Dynamax - I think that was the little aluminum round house he designed.

The word you want is Dymaxion. Richard Buckminster Fuller applied it to a number of items that he designed. See http://www.3wheelers.com/dymaxion.html for photos of three versions of the car. Wikipedia mentions Chrysler in the Dymaxion article, but I see no evidence that they were directly involved - though maybe contemplating producing it? - and the cars were Ford powered.
