The wild horse herds of the American West have long been
controversial. Recently, the federal government has considered putting-down or
selling for slaughter any wild horses or burros considered to be "excess". Instead
of taking such a drastic measure to protect farmland and private property,
could we use technology such as sensors to locate, trap, and relocate these
animals? This would be consistent with the Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro
Act of 1972. The purpose of the law, according to the American Wild Horse
Preservation Campaign, is to "preserve wild horses and burros as part of our
national heritage".
Wild Horse History
Typically, the wild horses of North
America are referred to as Mustangs. These animals are actually feral horses as opposed to being truly wild because
they are the descendants of horses brought to America by Spanish explorers
hundreds of years ago.
Tamed by Native Americans and Western cowboys, Mustangs are seen
now as a symbol of the spirit and heritage of the American West. Without anyone
to gather them up for work, the horses are managed and protected by the Bureau
of Land Management (BLM). Mustangs need protection from ranchers who want to
keep them off their land, or who would slaughter the horses in order make an
easy dollar.
Management Concerns Today
To keep the herds in check, a number of wild horses are
rounded up each year (particularly those in populated or ranch areas). Many of these
horses are offered up for adoption to the public and make excellent riding
horses and companions.
As less habitat becomes available, however, there is a push
for legislation to decrease herd sizes. But Mustangs don't understand
boundaries. Controversial approaches include putting down Mustangs or sending
non-adoptable horses to slaughter – an outrage to their fans.
Using Sensors to Relocate Horses
What if wild horses could be relocated instead? According to
a recent press release, Sandia National Laboratories has developed sensors for
national security that can be adapted for detecting the location of wild horses
in order to trap them for relocation.
Researchers from Sandia are working with rangers in the
overpopulated Jicarilla Wild Horse Territory in New
Mexico to determine when a horse has been trapped in
a corral. Because there are over 425 horses in an area that can safely support
50 to 105, it's important to act quickly to relocate a significant portion of
the herd - either to a remote location or via adoption.
So how does a "horse trap" work? It may sound inhumane, but
it's not. A horse trap is actually a salt or mineral lick or some hay inside a
corral. Seismic sensors detect large animals entering the corral and turn on a
camera that is connected to a trapper's transmitter. The trapper may be located
miles away, but he or she has the ability to push a button to close the
corral's gate. The trapper can then go and load the waiting horse or horses
into a trailer to be taken to a new home.
If people continue to think outside the box, we can continue
to make room for this piece of American history. Although Mustangs won't fit in
a museum and don't belong in a zoo, they are important to preserve – and
deserve to have a home in the U.S.
just as much as any citizen.
