People are either instantly familiar with Al Melling (IE, TVR
owners) or have never heard of him. If you're the latter, he's a
longtime consultant and engine designer, having worked on F1 engines
(including a V10 for Lola) since the Sixties.
I haven't run into many published interviews with Melling, but when I have they've been worth reading. I particularly enjoyed his answer to the question, "What qualities
should a good sports car have? And what makes a good engine?" Melling
answers:
"In my opinion a good sports car should be a car with good handling,
open or closed top, make the right noises, and look good especially
from a classical point of view from the days of 'wind in the hair'
sports cars. A number of modern sports cars, with slots, wings and
grooves are not sports cars, they are pseudo race cars."
