Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Would You Buy This General Lee?

Posted February 11, 2009 5:01 PM by dstrohl

I just recently returned from several days of Florida sunshine where, among other things, I attended the Mecum Auction in Kissimmee, held on January 22-24. Offered as Lot F73 (indicating that it would cross the block on Friday, if you're not familiar with Mecum's lot designation system), the VIN indicated that this General started life as a Charger R/T complete with a 375hp 440-cu.in. engine under the hood.

It's builder has since installed a 500hp 426 with dual quads. Also part of the package is a Dana 60 rear, front disc brakes and a 10-point roll cage hinged for easy entry. To help bolster a strong bid, the consigner claimed that the rotisserie restoration produced "the highest quality General Lee re-creation on the planet." Under the lights, it was bid up to $51,000, and then left Kissimmee unsold.
