Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

How Much Would You Pay for This '69 Corvette?

Posted February 16, 2009 5:01 PM by dstrohl

Since last fall, there's been a lot of speculation as to what effect the market will have on collector car values. Take this 1969 Chevy Corvette AA/GS drag car for instance, offered at Mecum's recent Kissimmee, Florida, auction. Lot F297 crossed the block late in the evening.

Try these facts on for size: It was restored to the colors of the Stone Woods & Cooke team's flip-top gasser that ran in the AA/GS class, with a 1,247hp, 392-based 454 Chrysler Hemi under the fiberglass body. It used to be the "Goldfinger" Chevy 327-powered Anglia gasser. It was the class winner at the NHRA Winternationals in 1968 and 1969. The chassis was built by NHRA legend Chuck Finders, and it was preserved (and notarized) by builder Steve Korney for 35 years. It was also sold on a bill of sale only - which means that you can't register it for any kind of street use (in case you are new to the hobby).

What would you have been willing to offer, and how far do you thing the bidding went?

In 1986, I was in Seattle, WA. There was a car lot in Seattle that sold classic Corvettes. They had one on the lot that was a 1961 and another that was 1962. Since my birthday was in 1962, I was interested and checked them out. They were both antique while with red interior and both look great, they were clean and shiny and looked brand new with original radio. Both were up for $25,000 each.

So I would say you can probably get $25,000 for the '69 too.
