Getting Paid to Save

Posted February 19, 2009 8:23 AM

There seems to be a universal drive in this economic climate to find low cost/no cost ways to improve efficiency or cut operating costs. Here's one approach where you can get paid at the same time that you're cutting energy costs — participate in the demand response programs of your local utility. The energy provider pays you to reduce non-essential loads during periods of peak demand. This article describes how one company did so and cut its electric bills by $115,000/year. Have you explored this option?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Supply Chain Management, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Supply Chain Management today.

We are studying DR as we speak. Having 3 midwest US manufacturing plants, each with different power sources, we are getting a mixed response from electric suppliers since the DR programs come from third parties. The biggest benefit that DR offers us is the ability to study our electric demand in a real time environment in return for the opportunity to reduce our demand during peaks. They sweeten the pot with cash incentives if we can cut our demand on short notice.

The power companies, in return, benefit from either not having to invest in additional generating capacity or buying peak power from other generators at inflated rates. The DRs operate on this margin.

One of our suppliers is all for this program, but another has filed an action with the PUC to have them set aside.

Film at eleven.
