As much as it looks like those photos making the rounds lately of
unsold automakers' inventories stacking up like cordwood on docks and
at test tracks, the photo above is the result of an intentional action:
Lee Iacocca's Ford Town USA,
a grand scheme that loaned a brand-new Ford car or truck to every one
of the 1,600 residents of Flora, Illinois, for a week in September
1960.
Now think of how much
goodwill the domestic automakers would foster if they did that again
today? I mean, they certainly have the spare inventory.
