Insuring Nukes

Posted April 28, 2009 8:24 AM

Are nuclear power plants an insurable risk, and if so should plants be required to carry insurance? This Nuclear Engineering International editorial details how nukes are insured in the U.S. and Europe - and argues for international insurance requirements. As of now, only 234 of the 436 nuclear power plants worldwide are covered by international liability and compensation regimes.

As long as insurance doesn't drive carelessness. I see many businesses large and small cutting costs for damage preventing countermeasures or just plain acting irresponsibly because "it's okay, insurance will take care of it."

you cannot insure nuclear waste that has a life span of at least 50 K years.

Do you think an insurance company will last that long?

Just a few things from my side:

1. I do non-destructive testing for a living. For the past 3 years I was busy on the aviation sector. I had the chance to work for a shutdown on a nuclear power station. I was against nuclear power...only because I did not understand and knew what exactly was going on there. I think a lot of people are against nuclear power ONLY because they are uninformed about it.

2. Can anybody tell me the amount of high dose nuclear waste compared to low dose nuclear waste?

3. Are people who complain about nuclear energy doing anything from their side to reduce the amount of energy used or come up with a better solution?

4. Are all people who oppose nuclear energy "pot smokers"?

very shallow article. Insure who against what? The public against the effects of an accident, the corporation against the liability associated with the risk. You cant insure these things period. Because the risk cannot be quantified and the damages that may be incurred cannot be either. It is a dinosaur that needs to be buried period or accept the risk that comes with the power produced.
