Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Steam-Powered Ford Trucks

Posted May 19, 2009 12:01 AM by dstrohl

Hugo90 over at the Hemmings Nation Flickr pool found this steam-powered Ford F-5 farm truck at the Pioneer Auto Show in Murdo, South Dakota. "Farmers make a lot of unusual things, and here is a great one", the caption reads. "There is no description of what is going on with this truck, but it is a large steam engine. The inside of the cab looks like a locomotive! The boiler is on the bed. From the size of it, I'd guess this one has a lot of torque."

We may see a lot more of this if *trucks* are mandated to 30 mpg.

I have a relative fuel sipper that is the least I can safely haul my six horse trailer with, and after a lot of after-market adjusting I have it up to 20mpg with diesel.
