Arc Flash Savvy?

Arc flash calculations can be complicated, not just because complex circuits may require complex formulas, but because there are multiple ways and formulas that someone can use to determine arc flash dangers. Becoming arc flash savvy also takes considerable training and expertise. Arc flash calculations can save lives. Does your company have procedures in place to determine Arc flash probability before performing maintenance duties?

A good place to start is to get a copy of NFPA 70e, "Standards for Electrical Safety in the Workplace". Article 130 is the basis for Arc Flash protective equipment. Annex D shows the calculations. Arc Flash calculations in NFPA 70e are from the IEEE 1584 paper. You will find that because of the large amount of data needed for the arc flash calculations, you are going to need a software program.

One of the key components of being "Arc Flash Savy" is education. It's not enough to do the just calculations and stickers. Training employees, those exposed on a regular basis, is crucial. They must have 70E training and certificates and the proper PPE and rated tools as well. Feel free to ask any questions on these issues, as education is the first line of defense!
