Prioritize Reliability Over Cost Control for Long-term Success

Posted March 16, 2015 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

Although many organizations stress the importance of reliability in maintenance and operations, their focus on cost control may indicate otherwise. A culture of reliability depends on two critical considerations: defining reliability as a strategy measured not by incremental improvements, but continuous ones; and realizing that such an approach extends to employees, not just assets. Committing solely to low maintenance costs can undermine reliability by emphasizing short-term results rather than long-term profitability. And, a focus on reliability can enhance both customer loyalty and personnel satisfaction.

That term you used..."personnel satisfaction". Iv'e been around the block a couple of times, and I can state assuredly, that is to employers what garlic is to vampires.

"Don't bring that stuff near me, or I'll have a hissy fit"....!!!!

They just don't give a damn...because they are too dollar/profit concious. The power the dissaisfied employee has, is to withold ingenuity and productivity and therefore an impact on the bottom line, but inevitably, the business owners rely on their 'bean counters' to identify such golden opportunities, and of course, they are not capable of it.

From the article: "... the internal battle being waged in many of today's most dynamic, forward-thinking organizations.... One (path) leads to a reliability culture with long-term growth, the other leads to a cost-control culture with short-term profits."

Any organization which prioritizes short-term profits cannot be categorized as "forward-thinking."
