Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

DIY Pocket Bike

Posted June 10, 2009 12:01 AM by dstrohl

We saw this killer buildup from an article in Popular Mechanics on ADVRider.com. Makes us want to whip out the welder and put one together ourselves. The picture at left gives you a sense of scale.

From the original 1970 Popular Mechanics article:

"Though it will never challenge is bigger, more powerful commercially produced cousins, this shop-built micromini-bike will get you where you want to go for peanuts. Putting along – powered by its ¾-hp powerplant – the rig hits a racy 11 mph when flat out – more than enough to get you out on that backwoods jaunt or – with modifications for street use – to class, football practice or part-time job with time to spare."
