General Mills, maker of the popular breakfast cereal Cheerios, was recently scolded by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its claims to prevent or treat heart disease. Generally, only FDA approved drugs are able to make such claims. The Cheerios box states, "you can lower your cholesterol 4 percent in 6 weeks." The FDA has requested that the company reword it's statements, or apply for approval as a new drug.
