The Coming 'Tweet Bomb'

Posted July 03, 2009 7:46 AM

We all know how rumors and false stories can quickly spread over the Internet. Imagine, now, what a single text message, of less than 140 characters, could do if it simultaneously reached 100 million people. Welcome to the era of Twitter, and the potential "tweet bomb" that could mobilize tens of millions of people to perform some coordinated activity at a breathtaking speed. Could governments get control over this massive information force, and use it, for example, to warn of tsunamis? Or could devious individuals create panic by initiating reflexive responses to imagined fears? Could it be a great help, or could it be frightening?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Drives, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Drives today.

I am sceptical that it would work myself. Ever try to get one person to do what you want? Think it will work any better with 100 million?

As far as public warning systems we already have the public warning systems in place in every American population area and 80% of the people do absolutely nothing when the sirens go off! The other 20% go and see what the fuss is about but don't actually take shelter or follow the prescribed action plans.

Around here the weather warning sirens go off every time there is a suspicious looking dark cloud moving towards a populated area. The ones that do take the proper precautions are few and far between. Most ignore it or go and follow the storm cloud to see what develops.

Yes.Yes.Yes. and Yes.

Exactly the same concerns were raised at the advent of the printing press, radio, the telephone and television. Twitter is just the latest internet evolutionary step. Is it mostly crap? Probably. Does it serve an important function? Iranian dissidents would say yes as would New Yorkers wondering why there's a plane in the Hudson river.

Like the previous examples, Twitter is an incredibly efficient communications channel for its time. And also like the previous examples, it will be subject to abuse.

Not everyone pays attention to twitter - I'm gen Y, and I'd say 98% of my friends aren't on twitter, and wouldn't put any stock in any information presented on twitter profiles. My opinion about twitter can best be represented by the following graphical association...

Sad to say that I am first generation baby boomer and way to many of my peers are on this time stealing garbage.

Kudos to you for being enlightened.

I'm afraid my diagram would look much the same. There are a few things I care about that are tweeted, but I choose to find out about them according to my own will rather than my telephone's...anyway, I forget to carry the blasted thing half the time anyway.

I find it's quite enlightening and far less stressful to be uninformed until you decide to pursue the info on your own...IMHO.

I've heard much about twitter, never actually been there, never have seen a "Tweet". Maybe I should have a look, but a large part of me keeps saying "don't waste the time, you need that time for CR4".

Myspace came, was Strong, and now is quickly loosing ground... I think the same can be said for facebook, but its still much stronger than myspace. Does anybody use "chatrooms" anymore? I remember when they were all the rave. One "internet communication" that i can safely say is still as strong as when it came out is the good ol' email. If I had to take a guess, twitter will be strong for a while, but inevitably something else will come along and steal it's thunder. Internet based social sites are like fashion... they come and go.

As far as twitter as a terrorist tool, I suppose it's totally possible, and could probably be used to mobilize a bunch of people quickly, but can't the same be done in literally dozens if not hundreds of other ways?

I agree. My Space, Facebook & now Tweet - they are like trendy cyberbars; first they are hot and then the crowd moves on to the next big thing. I believe that there is a weird relationship between the short-attention-spanned and the short-lifecycles of these services and the e-devices that deliver them.
