I heard pros and cons both ways...

Dairy farmers used Palm Oil as a protein supplement. The butter made from the milk from the cows that were fed Palm Oil had detrimental effects when the butter was used in bakeries.

"Palm oil increases the proportion of saturated fats in the milk, making it less malleable at room temperature. This caused the 2021 Canadian "Buttergate" controversy, highlighting issues of consumer trust in the food system, potential health effects of increased saturated fat intake, and the ongoing environmental concerns of palm oil production, including rainforest deforestation.

The "Buttergate" Controversy

  • Harder Butter: Opens in new tab A key problem was the noticeable change in butter consistency, making it harder to spread at room temperature, which sparked consumer outrage in Canada.
  • Increased Butterfat: Opens in new tab The goal of feeding palm oil was to increase butterfat yield, but the saturated fats from the palm oil ended up in the milk, altering the butter's properties.

Health and Environmental Concerns

  • Health Implications: Increased intake of saturated fat raises levels of bad cholesterol and increases the risk of heart attacks, making palm oil in the dairy supply chain a concern for public health.
  • Environmental Impact: The expansion of oil palm plantations contributes significantly to rainforest destruction and has threatened numerous species, including mammals and birds.

The Aftermath and Lessons Learned

  • Dairy Farmer Response: Dairy farmers in Canada faced criticism and were advised to adjust their cow feed to restore consumer confidence in dairy products.
  • Public Trust: The "Buttergate" incident raised questions about public trust in the food system and the transparency of food production.
  • Alternatives: Research is ongoing to find more sustainable and less impactful feed alternatives, such as novel palm-free fat supplements that can improve feed efficiency and reduce the carbon footprint of milk production. Buttergate was a 2021 scandal in Canada where consumers complained that butter had become too hard to spread at room temperature. The cause was traced to dairy farmers feeding their cows palm oil-based supplements, which increased the butter's saturated fat content, leading to increased firmness.

Buttergate was a 2021 scandal in Canada where consumers complained that butter had become too hard to spread at room temperature. The cause was traced to dairy farmers feeding their cows palm oil-based supplements, which increased the butter's saturated fat content, leading to increased firmness. What Happened?

  • In 2021, many Canadian consumers reported that their butter was unusually hard and difficult to spread, even when left out at room temperature.
  • This led to widespread discussion and frustration, with the term "Buttergate" emerging to describe the situation.

Why Did It Happen?

  • The root cause was the increased use of palm oil-based feed supplements by dairy farmers.
  • Palm oil is high in saturated fat, which has a higher melting point than unsaturated fats.
  • When cows consume these supplements, the butterfat in their milk also has a higher proportion of saturated fats.
  • Consequently, the butter produced from this milk became firmer and remained solid at room temperature.

The Solution

  • The issue was addressed by dairy farmers adjusting their feed practices.
  • This involved reducing the amount of palm oil-based supplements, leading to softer butter that was more spreadable."
