I'm sure 76% accuracy would hold up in a court of law.

OK the TOF MS results give a 76% discrimination between inland and coastal trees. What about now combining that with metals analysis in the ash to see if further selection is possible? Next use optical comparator (scaled) scans to compare thickness of tree rings between inland and coastal to see if any correlation results.

One could even break it down by spectral band in the UV, visible (or selected color band), NIR, or mid IR.

Next you could start doing associated entymology of bugs that wind up traveling with the logs, bugs captured in resin, etc.
