The basic difference is clearly explained in the name. One's alternating in amplitude the other is not. Try Wikipedia for a more in depth explanation and analysis.

What's your doubt?

Enjoy the story about the war between AC and DC. It involves Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla. It is fascinating and informative.

Dear Mr.Shailendra Mani,

Refer any Standard Text Book. I shall try to explain in a simple way.

Alternating Current and hence the Voltage will follow a SINE WAVE. The Equation is e = Emax x Sin Ø.

The current also will follow the Sine Wave when the Load is LINEAR, but will be lagging which depends upon the Power Factor. The AC current involves Resistance, Inductance and Capacitance and current is controlled by the IMPEDENCE for which the Equation is Sq.Rt of ( R^2 + (XL - Xc)^2) where R is the Resistance, XL is the inductance, 2 x Phi. x f x L and and Xc is the Capacitance, is 1/ 2 x Phi. x f x C where f = Inductance in Henrys, C is Capacitance in Farads.

For Non-Linear load this equation will not hold good. Non-Linear load is caused due to Harmonic effect, caused by conversion of AC to DC and again DC to AC for which the frequency may be constant or variable frequency.

DC is direct current as the name implies and voltage will be in straight line and not in sine form, and the current is controlled by PURE RESISTANCE in the circuit.

Dear Mr.ShailendraMani,

In continuation to my Post No.6, I want to add the following, which I for got.

1. The AC current for the Motor will follow the CIRCLE DIAGRAM and not the linear variation in relation to the Load. In other words the locus of current will be half-a- circle, Circle Dia decided by the Vector of No-Load Current and the Vector of Short-Circuit Current. Where as the Load Current of DC will be straight line perhaps in the form of y = mx + c

2. The AC motor will have SLIP NORMALLY 4% if need be it can be increases upto 15%, The DC motor does not have Slip.

3. The AC Motor the speed is governed by the Equation f = ( N x P)/120 where, f = frequency of the power supply, N is the Speed in RPM, P is the number of of Poles in even numbers in the motor. For DC Motor it is governed by the Field current.
