How to Make a Sticky Fly Trap?

03/27/2015 6:32 AM

Hi ! although it may sound silly, I need to go back in time and get a recipe for making a fly trap. Short story: I got some pineapples at the supermarket some days ago. The next day the kitchen was full of tiny flies: Tried all insecticides I had at home: none worked. Called Johnson & Johnson and their reply was: FORGET IT! Only old fashioned highly toxic stuff like DDT do kill them. I searched the web and made all the imaginable traps using empty plastic bottles with YELLOW fluids inside (mine are not attracted to that color), acetic acid: no interest either... I don´t expect you to make an internet search for me :-), just need some first hand advise ! Thank you! Have a great weekend!

google diy stick fly trap. Got a lot of hits.

Put a piece of pineapple in the bottles with the yellow fluid.

Try diatomaceous earth. Place it where you see them land the most.

Mix equal parts (by vol.) of water, sugar and honey/syrup/molasses (whatever's handy).

Boil until all dissolved and nicely gooey. Dip strips of thick paper. Job done.

Yes! I already used the vacuum cleaner... but they reproduce faster than I can "abduce" them whith the VC.

Reproducing?

They have a breeding habitat in your house somewhere. Get rid of that and the maggots and you won't need squat.

Well... despite being very tiny, they probably mate and lay eggs on the walls or ceiling where they sit.

Now that I got rid of the adults, will clean the kitchen walls with detergent hoping this pest is over!

Doubt if they'd lay eggs on walls or ceiling - the eggs hatch into teeny little maggots, which need food (usually rotting fruit, but can be anything fermenting). No food - larvae die. The mummy flies are attracted by the smell to find somewhere "fruitful" to lay.

I will spend the night "on garde" with the VC nozzle on my right hand. Every tiny creature moving around will be aspirated and microwaved!

Well, if you don't mind a detailed clean-up project in the area when you're done... spray something like this all over the place:

http://elmers.com/product/detail/E454

Takes 'em out of the air fast and creates a tacky surface for those you miss that will land eventually.

When you're done, use a disinfectant cleaning spray (with bleach) and hit all those hard to reach places. You'll know if you miss a spot - because there will be glue on it ;-)

So far I tried to prepare a sticky caramel using sugar glucose and water. No positive results yet: it gets too hard and does not stick. My dog and me enjoyed eating the caramel! (It reminded me my childhood!) After this nice experience I have the feeling i don´t hate the flies that much ;-) Tomorrow I´ll get them with the vacuum cleaner!

Re: How to Make a Sticky Fly Trap?

Yes, at one point we had a persistent infestation of the little buggers and just left the vacuum cleaner in the kitchen, plugged in and ready to go. Anytime we'd see them, we fired up the sucking monster and went to town.

These ones were particularly agile and very difficult to catch in flight. We'd wait for them to alight, then slowly approach them with nozzle so as to not startle them back into flight, then as the nozzle approached and the moving air tended to keep them anchored. By the time they were being 'scared off' by the nozzle, the air flow made it impossible to escape the deadly vortex.

Be sure to stuff a rag or paper towel in the hose or the little buggers can sometimes find their way back out.

Maybe you could build a Trojan Rabbit and get them all to climb in it, then slam the door shut and throw it over the wall.

Mixture needs the honey or syrup to keep it sticky - and don't overcook it.

You could try the mushroom Amanita Muscarina (Fly Agaric) in a bowl of milk. Keep pets and hippies away!

r&ddoc try a fruit fly trap made of plastic cup with apple cider vinegar, red wing vinegar, and a couple drops of dish detergent. Cover cup with plastic wrap strech tight secure with rubber band. Punch holes in plastic wrap with toothpick. Leave out at least 24hrs. On a side note have you ever seen the fly deterents that use a ziplock bag half filed with water and a penny inside ? I dont know how they work but they do work for certain flies.

Hi! I tried different types of vinegar... but for some reasons THESE flies are not attracted to it (!!??). From the different baits I tried, fresh tomatoes seem to be their Achilles Heel... but not if enclosed in a trap.

GA for Randall and Brave Sir Robin! After trying all kind of natural baits / traps (sorry, did not have time nor nerves to buy online and wait for the delivery!); finally went for again the vacuum cleaner. Initially I was only able to catch sitting flies (approaching them from behind or the top), Using a very bright light I also learned to catch them during flight (60% effectivity rate!). Due to their small mass, nozzle tip has to get quite close (1´´or so) to suck them in. In my innocence I thought that the whirl and heat inside the bag would kill them.... WRONG: many found their way out trough the hose! After following Brave Sir Robin´s advice (stuffing the hose) microwaving the bag for 30 sec´s proved to be a much better alternative! So far I graduated as the best fruit-fly killer in my neighbourhood!

I have a very special powder produced from an ancient recipe; one known only to a very few people.
It was passed on to me by my grandfather, and from his grandfather before him.

I cannot tell you the recipe, (trade secret) but I can sell you some powder if you wish?

It's very easy to use, in fact anyone can use it, you just sprinkle it on to the applicator,
a long piece of 4 x 2, and then go WHACK!
My special powder is 100% guaranteed to kill all known (and unknown) bugs and flies.

Hope this helps....

jt.

Seriously, There are now electricutors - tennis racquet style electronic grids
which you can use to clobber them en mass. (frying tonight) Just for a few dollars.

I have one of said electrocutors (they were selling them off cheap at Maplin a few years ago). They're a bit of fun for the odd house-fly or wasp (but they usually only stun the larger insects). Pretty much useless against an invasion of fruit-flies. End up with tennis elbow. a smashed-up house (full of laughing little flies), and a device shorted out by a couple of dead flies.

True, JohnDG. Mine worked ok. (I was surprised how effective) however with only one eye the house rapidly became a scene from Peter Sellars and the Pink Panther movies. I think if they sold a "small blanket" of these (to hang down) they would be a hit. :-)

You could try those wasp sprayers that have a long reach, and it also works well (when lit) as a flame thrower against those nasty jack-booted storm troopers, if those are frequently in your neighborhood (this is a jest). Please do not attack the authorities, as they have a rather narrow sense of humor when applied to such items.

I think Mango juice slightly fermenty is probably what these little fruit flies would like. Your trap needs to have the attraction of a major mall store to the ladies.

Who knows, but some insects are attracted to the flourescent colors in the near UV and blue visible spectrum. Maybe you should also experiment with that.

Beer and peaches with a bit of Boric Acid should help their plight.
