Chevy Cavalier Problem

04/01/2015 12:58 PM

The Chevy Cavalier just isn't running smoothly any more. The engine starts well and shifts into gear without any problems. The problem is that there is an annoying banging and scraping sound that gets both louder and faster as I speed up. The car never used to overheat but now it overheats rather quickly. I hope someone can help.

I checked the tires and they are all inflated properly. The left blinker fluid was low. I filled it up. I hope there was no permanent damage done by running the car with the left blinker fluid low. The battery is fine but the passenger side headlight is out.

I read on CR4 recently that windshields have millions of tiny pits in them. I suspect that these pits may be causing drag and therefore causing the car to overheat. I can try cleaning the windshield and applying Rain-X to make the glass more smooth. That should help some but I think there are other problems.

Everyone knows that CR4 is the world headquarters for Chevy Cavalier experts. Anyone have any idea what might be wrong?

I think I see your problem: You chose the red Cavalier - those are the worst!

Sorry to hear about your problems, BruceFlorida. Chevy Cavaliers just aren't the automobiles we wish they were. I'm completely out of suggestions, but I figured I'd voice my sympathy.

I am just glad that you didn't post this as an Anonymous Poster. We'd have figured that it was an April Fools prank immediately.

So far the Chevy Cavalier seems to run better than my April Fools posting. The days of the cast iron bathtub seem to be gone. . . . Or, maybe everyone thinks it is a serious posting and they are still researching the answer.

I thought it was pretty good. Too bad you can't give an original post a GA vote!

The Chevy Cavalier just isn't running smoothly any more.

April Fool's, it wasn't really running smoothly to begin with as I implied!

Now, if your Cavalier ran on gunpowder, such as the car that one of today's posters wanted to design, the solution to your problem would be easy. Just blow it to Hell.

It appears the vehicle is suffering from SNAFU which resulted in it becoming FUBAR which may or may not be the reason it is objecting violently and getting overexcited resulting in copious amounts of heat being emitted from the flux capacitor.

More than likely the air dam below the front bumper is damaged or non-existent thereby the cooling air is not being directed up to and through the radiator properly.

Judging from appearance the vehicle may also be suffering from inoperable cooling fan(s) and/or radiator or water pump damage.

The damage in posting #9 is not nearly as bad as the damage in the other two photographs.

So far the red paint theory that KiloWatt0 posted in #2 seems to be at the top of the list.

From the sounds that you describe it would most likely be a water pump bearing. I would employ the repair schedule used on the 1960's Morris Minis

1. Jack up the front number plate.

2. Jack up the rear number plate.

3. replace everything in between

Heck, we didn't do that much work. We removed the radiator cap and drove a replacement vehicle underneath it.

Take a coat hanger and tie up your dragging muffler and fix the hole in the radiator!

you need real gas, that ethanol crap just makes your well engineered gem under-perform! run a tank of Supreme and all those little annoyances should disappear. one suggestion, park on the bad side of town, leave it running with the keys in the ignition. leave a $20 and a thank you note on the dash. you might get lucky and It will be gone upon your return

I tried that one time. Next morning the car was still there, but with a ticket citing me a $100 fine for littering.
