Description of Letter Code on Lubricants

Dear Friends;

Normally some letter codes are mentioned on the containers of lubricants such as

0W-30

5W-30

10W-30

10W-40

etc

What are the meaning of these letter codes?

"W means winter"??? gosh durn it I thought it meant Water, I thought those were recipes...10 parts Water - to 40 parts Oil.

No wonder my Cavalier is making funny noises....whenever it does start...
