Ansys Doubts

04/22/2015 7:34 AM

HI,Can some one tell me which failure criteria do i need to check for Stainless steel casted component.I want to analyse a caster Cup under static linear loading condition.Cup is made of stainless steel by casting process.
Now i have some doubts regarding this
1.When i perform static linear analysis do i need to check for Van mises stress or Principal stress?2.Does stainless steel casted part undergoes Yield stress? Means do i need to compare the stress value with Yield stress of material for calculating Factor of safety or to Ultimate Stress? Please guide me in this. Also attach some document related to it.
3.Does Casted Part both Plastic or Metal undergoes Yield Point?
Regards,Saravanan

Perhaps a little destructive testing is needed....

"Maximum Principle Stress Theory - According to this theory failure will occur when the maximum principal stress in a system reaches the value of the maximum stress at elastic limit in simple tension. This theory is approximately correct for cast iron and brittle materials generally."

"Von Mises Stress (Distortion Energy Theory) - This theory proposes that the total strain energy can be separated into two components: the volumetric (hydrostatic) strain energy and the shape (distortion or shear) strain energy. It is proposed that yield occurs when the distortion component exceeds that at the yield point for a simple tensile test."
