Networked ESD Testing System

04/30/2015 3:29 PM

Hi

I have a large clean room with multiple smaller, internal rooms.

6 of these internal doors require the users to be tested for ESD. Multiple other doors/rooms do not require ESD testing so not all users need to be ESD-tested.

Currently, we have one ESD tester at the entrance to the clean room. This tester is not connected in any way to the 6 doors, so compliance with ESD testing is essentially voluntary. We would like to network the doors to the tester, but the current product does not have that capability; we would need to buy individual testers for each door and a software upgrade (very pricey) .

What I'm looking for is a networked ESD testing system whereby we can test at one station and then allow access (presumably through a card reader of some type) to these 6 doors. Does anyone know of anything like this?

Best

John

This is not uncommon and there are static grounding testers equipped with voltage free contacts that can be used with door entry systems. One example is below.

Thanks; I searched for ESD testers and found several devices available. I'm looking for a networked solution.

From past experience it would be cheaper to get ESD testers for each doorway than to develop the necessary integration for the multiple door situation you describe.

There is also the necessary trust level that if two employees arrive at the same time, the door will register one person, but both could enter.

Talk with the staff, develop the culture and pride in the company product and everyone will check.

What class is your cean room?

If you already have people "suiting up" maybe everybody needs to be ESD tested.

It's a class 10,000. Everyone already suits up but only a few (who pass the ESD test) are allowed into these specific rooms.

Even after the person enter the room after ESD testing can you ensure that the operator does not develop static Electricity? The method we used to adopt in ammunition filling shop is that at the entrance of the door every person entering the room has to change his dress and shoes which does not generate static electricity. There after Electrostatic discharge is done and tested for ESD at the entrance. Conductive flooring is done for entire room and all persons entering the room has to wear conductive shoes. A proper earthing system has to be provided for the conductive flooring to ensure the absence of Static energy during the entire process.

Yes, thank you! I'm going to look into these further.
