Cable for Surge Monitor

05/15/2015 3:31 AM

Hi, I wanted to know how the size of the cable connecting the Lightning Arrestor and Surge Monitor decided? I have a 42kV 10kA Station class Lightning Arrestor supplied with a Surge Monitor and a multistranded 35sq.mm cu. cable for connecting surge monitor and LA. I would like to know how this size was chosen.

Its most likely decided from maximum current expected to pass through the cable, plus safety margin.

But then you could always ask the vendor of the equipment what their design specification is.

Its amazing how sometimes one can broaden his horizon by talking to the manufacturer directly.

I'd give it a try.

Thank you Smith and Iyn for replying. For what I have understood the sizing of the cable would not have been done based on the maximum current that passes because its the surge current and its quantum will be huge. I reckon it is sized based on the continuous leakage current (the current that normally passes through an LA when it is put in line). Just wanted to how is the calculation done for that. Thought I could get some help from here. Thanks

"the surge current and its quantum" - it is true. the magnitude of lightning surge current is huge but the duration is in micro-seconds. So, the requirement here is that the conductor has to withstand the surge thermally as well as mechanically (electrodynamic forces).

The continuous leakage current is supposed to be in mill-Amps (that too in single digits). Hence, not an issue in cable sizing.

Generally, depending on the surge arrester discharge current rating, the cable size is recommended by the manufacturer.

It was probably chosen by an electrical engineer.

Why would you question it?

This sounds like a case of, "if you have to ask, you probably don't need to know".

Hi anup2mohan, I generally use 2 nos of 1 x 35 sq. mm earthing cable as down conductors for the class A type external lightning arrestor from the LA to the earth. The cables then go under the lightning counter or monitor and then into the earth pit.

I employ 16 sq. mm cable for Phase Neutral Surge protector (Class B) type. The Neutral to earth however will be 35 sq. mm.

One general piece of advice is to keep the length of conductors (cable / wire) as short as possible. All cables / wires are good quality multistrand with proper lugs and protection from elements.

If you need any further details, email me and I can send you a few videos on (a) placement of class A, Class B and (b) Installation tips

Cheers

Are you talking about a mains feeder surge arrestor and arrestor life countdown counter or a lightning air termination with a strike counter?
