IS/IEC/IEEE Standard for Bus Bar Sizing Calculations

05/14/2015 12:56 PM

Which BIS/IEC/IEEE Standard details the calculations for sizing the bus bars for rated current, for short time withstand current and for short circuit force withstand?

I don't understand why you didn't use Google, Mildred, especially being Electrical Expert no.65 and all that.

According to what you claim to be "electricalexpert" you should be the one to give support to other and not to ask for basic informations as you do.

<cringe>

You understand why people are making comments don't you based on your CR4 profile AND your previous insightful comments on busbars and short circuit currents.

I cannot remember of the top of my head because I don't build switchboards from scratch, BUT I believe the standard you want (atleast the IEC one) is the one relating to switchboards (or similar). You will probably have to try a search of the IEC standards website using "switchboard" to narrow down the potential options. That or try an internet search and see if the standard pops up as a reference.

Try searching our standards store with some of your terms. You will be able to read the descriptions of the standards to help determine which one will help you.

Have you done a search on Busbar Sizing in this forum yet? Rarely a month goes by without some Anonymous Poster asking roughly the same question. Why no one reports it as a duplicate post is beyond me, then, I'm funny that way.

Refer The book "Panel Busbar Sizing calculations" by "Mr. Thomas and Mr. Rata".

In order to fabricate a product you need-except the theoretical knowledge-a huge experience in the field. So, I agree with above remarks.

However, if you don't intend to build you switchgear, for your general information, see:

ABB Switchgear Manual ed.12 [or 11] ch. 4 Dimensioning switchgear installations

I agree the CDA Publication 22 is an excellent start to this subject.

Great link! Everyone should download it and use it as the standard answer for all questions related to copper busbar sizing that we get on CR4. GA...

There's the 1996 version (a single scanned document) at http://www.copperalliance.org.uk/docs/librariesprovider5/resources/pub-22-copper-for-busbars-pdf.pdf

Dear sir

For Aluminium Busbar sizing we normally follow the book " Aluminium Busbars" by Thomas & Rata.

This book deals with open air current rating of busbars, derating factors for temperature, enclosure etc.

This book does not follow any IS/IEC/IEEE standards. But they have referred BS 2898:1957.

In India most of the Switch board and panel manufacturers follow this book for Aluminum busbar sizing.

With regard to Copper busbar sizing, It is Copper development authority, London, they have published all the details, based on which Busbar sizing are arrived at.

DIN 43 670 also gives details.

Please also refer to IEC60059 on this subject

Another good reference book is "Electrical Industrial Power Engineer's hand book" by K C Agarwal.
