Why HT motors are star-connected?

Why HT motors are star-connected?

It is highly unlikely that a HT motor would ever be started by the star/delta method. By star connecting the Volts/Turn is reduced to the minimum.

Hi,

I`ve got 24 Nos.HT motor which all are star connected reasonbeing insulation level as we aware in star mode phase voltage become V (line)/1.732 mean we have saved insulation for that system.Suppose we choose delta connected HT motor we will have to increase insulation level. It will bw sheer wastage of money beside it size of motor become too large.

Good luck

Thanks for reply,

What about torque? Delta connected motors have more torque.

Raja,

Good question.

We know about torque but economy also prime factor for an engineer .If you ask for torque then go for Slip Ring Motor so that one can insert resistance in its rotor circuit & can increase torque accordingly .Check torque formula for induction motor.

Good luck

It is the mechanical load that presents the torque/speed characterisitics to the motor, and motors and their starting arrangements must be selected with this as a primary consideration.

In HT motor by connecting in Star u have only one weak spot. Connecting in Delta would mean three joints. Though voltage will be rated by 1.732 full insulation is used and not graded insulation as done in case of transformer because the HT voltage levels used max are 11KV (Though some 33KV motors Have been reported to be in use.)so saving in insulation will not result in cost reduction.Torque has nothing to do with connection.Torque is KW*K /speed or RPM.Type of connection won't make any difference. The reason they are always in Star is no advantage is gained by using delta,On the other hand weak spots are more.Secondly a neutral point helps in Protection.
