Won't Turn Over

05/16/2015 5:47 PM

hello I've seen some of the questions asked her before I have a 1998 Chevy Cavalier automatic it is had the engine light on for a while I'm constantly checked all the fluids and under the hood everything's fine recently it started to sputter and not want to start reading really high whether the gas is pressed or not and now it is not turning over at all there's no clicking noise it just wont turn over I seem to be able to pump the gas and get it to want to start but its not starting anymore at all

This vehicle is at least 17 years old. It may have just simply finally worn out. i recommend you take this car to either your local repair person or your local junk yard. If you insist on trying to repair this vehicle yourself you should learn how to read the computer codes.

The ignition switch or the fuse or the battery cable connections corroded, check all those...also check the battery and alternator...then take to auto parts and get codes read and change parts required....or sell it as it sits, and start over with another beater....

It may be ready for a seat on a pole!

Your description is confusing. When you turn the key to the start position, what happens? Does the engine crank or is there no response?

"now it is not turning over at all there's no clicking noise it just wont turn over I seem to be able to pump the gas and get it to want to start but its not starting anymore at all"

With such a clear definition of symptoms, I'm surprised we can't figure this one out.

As a non entity, the term "Wants to start" is difficult to apply. Perhaps a good nights sleep would help. At least you have the engine light to assist in working on it in the dark.

The way to make a Cavalier turn over is to get a dozen bohunks to lift one side, and treat it like a turtle. Even easier than tipping cows.

You could use half a dozen boondockers.

Not being english speaking myself, i will try to express what you said. 1. the engine light is on. 2. you could not see or detect any shortage of fluids that you can check 3. One day it did start, sputtered and then started reving very high even though you did not press the gas pedal/excelrator. 4. Then it stalled and now it do not turn over any more and the starter solenoid is not even clicking at all. I know there is some body here that will know and give you some advice, I think that the high reving caused a failure like an engine seizure and that engine will never turn over again until you have it rebuild. Trying to start it while it was stuck you burned the selfstarter that is protected from overheating only if it can run and keep trying most probably destroyed the battery. The answers so far that suggest that you get help or get rid/sell it is the best answers so far.

Re: Won't Turn Over

Her's my tactic:

Turn on the headlights and try to start the engine. Have an observer watch the headlights. If they dim or go out when you try to start the car the battery is dead.

If not, then the problem may be a relay, starter solenoid, or a bad ignition key switch.

It's possible to seize an engine, but there is usually a fairly catastrophic noise that goes with that. You pull out the spark plugs and use a wrench or socket to try to turn the engine by hand to feel if it turns freely, but that may be beyond your abilities if you lack tools.

Generally, multiple types of failures don't happen all at once. There usually is a single cause that can sometimes give you multiple symptoms.

I would start with getting the engine to crank and if the original poster is confused about how to do that it may be time to call a tow truck and arrange for a shop to give you an estimate.

The original poster can tap into a world of knowledge on fixing a car on the internet, but if they do not have a basic working knowledge of cars, troubleshooting techniques, and the ability to follow wiring diagrams it can be all but impossible to get meaningful help.

Best of luck!

Welcome to CR4 amarie,

We love and hate this car here.

Ignore the comments that don't help at all and just smile or groan and answer the questions which help the engineers here actually fully understand your problem and then offer some useful advice.

At this stage you have a car that won't even crank anymore....you haven't flattened the battery trying to start now it have you?

OP: "and now it is not turning over at all there's no clicking noise it just wont turn over I seem to be able to pump the gas and get it to want to start but its not starting anymore at all"

You must "wake it up" before it will turn over.

Seriously;

It sounds like the battery is totally discharged or has failed.

Try putting the battery on high-rate charge for at least thirty (30) minutes before attempting to start the vehicle again. (BE SURE THE BATTERY CABLES ARE DISCONNECTED BEFORE CHARGING THE BATTERY AT A HIGH RATE OR THE VEHICLE WILL SUFFER SEVERE ELECTRICAL DAMAGE.)

If the engine will not turn over after you charge the battery, remove the battery and take it to the closest repair shop or auto parts store to have it charged and tested.

If the battery tests good put it back in the car and try to start it.

If the car will not turn over with a fully charged, known good battery, then you have other electrical issues hat require a seasoned, competent mechanic's hands-on input.

If the vehicle starts, you will need to check and verify the charging system (alternator, charging circuit, etc.) is working correctly and that it is applying (13.5 -14.8) Volts DC at/on the battery terminals while car engine is running.

If you do not have a volt-ohm meter and know how to use it, you will have to drive the vehicle to the closest competent repair shop or auto parts store to have the charging system checked and repaired.

Good luck and stay safe.

Re: Won't Turn Over

It sounds like you are not very familiar with auto mechanics so here are some simple tests.

1. Turn on the headlights - If they don't light, you have a battery problem. Check that the connections are tight and not corroded. If they are good, you need a new battery.

2. If the headlights light, turn the key to start while watching the headlights - If they do not dim, the starter is not connected. Check that the wires to the starter are tight and not corroded.

3 If the headlights light, turn the key to start while watching the headlights - If they dim and the engine does not turn over, something is frozen and repairs are probably not within your ability. You will need to tow it to a shop.

Before you spend any money on repairs, check the Kelly Blue Book (KBB) Internet site. The car is probably worth less than the cost of repairs.

Marie, rather than wondering if the engineers who actually designed the cavalier are part of the cr4 membership,,, Here is another idea. Check to see of your state has a Vehicle Retirement Program. In California where I live, they do. I had a 1992 Chevrolet S-10 pickup, the engine was worn out and would not pass the emission test., The Blue Book value of the truck was $900.00 (USD) The state gave me $1500.00 to retire the truck. I used the money as a down payment on a new truck. Easy-Weezie.

Posts 15 and 18 should get you started. Do you have jumper cables? If so connect them +to +, and - to - to a second car running, it will supply sufficient electrical power to start your car. Once you have headlights working, find the starter motor. There will be a small purple wire on it. Make SURE the car is in park, or neutral with the parking brake on, and the wheels chocked, and the key OFF. Use a small piece of bare ended wire to jump from the purple wire to the stud holding the positive battery cable to the starter. This should cause the engine to turn over, but not start.

Try that and let us know what you find.

If it does crank, then try again, this time with the key in the ON position.

Please head the safety instruction of bob c.
