07/15/2007 10:06 AM

How can safely remove adhesive glue from 10 yr old tile off of delicate hardwood flooring that is 100 years old and fragile?

It will be virtually imposible without damaging the patina of the wood...but the beauty of wood is that it can be sanded down and re finished. So re do the whole floor...OR...

If you have a nice worn distressed finish then use a chisel very carefully to just pare off the adhesive and wax it afterwards...there will be a mark but it will fade back with time. Marks are part of the beauty of an old floor...don't mess with stain. I just can't understand why people stain wood... let the natural colour show through...if you really must match up a finish do it very carefully.

I hate the 'Spanish Mahogany' finishes that look like tart's lipstick !

I appreciate your help, I went to walmart tonight and bought some goo gone extreme and it is working great, except the wood is so delicate that I went into the wood some with a scraper. But it will be great, when I get my house back to the beauty it once was. Finances are tight right now. One day at a time, and God in control all things are possible. I hope you are well and have a great summer. I bought this house 10 room house for $20,000. But after I fix it up, it should be worth $120,000. I might be dead, but the next person who gets this old house, will appreciate the effort. I just moved here from Kentucky, I miss Kentucky it is so beautiful and green. Iowa is okay. But trying to find a job, while I tried to attend college again,I quit my job after 22 years of driving a semi tractor trailer. I want a master's degree in Criminal Justice and Psychology and Sociology on the side line. I want to open up shelters for the kids that are being abused sexually and physically. GOD BLESS.

I appreciate your blesses Munky, I love challenges. I love hard work, still have to remove old paint from old plaster walls and old wood base boards and staircases. I scraped a little last night from my stair case, looks like cherry wood behind there. Trying to find the right grant to apply for in the US to help me bring this house back. It was built back in 1906, I have friends trying to get me to apply for extreme house make over to help me out. I am in a job crisis right now, I want to attend college, but I am not able to find work to pay for the house, other bills, plus school. I wanted to get a science degree, but past algebra, I get lost. I love math, but I just can't see past algebra, maybe it is the instruction. So, I am choosing Criminal Justice in helping Sexually, physically abused children. If I don't find something soon, I might loose my all my belongings, I have been driving a tractor trailer for 22 years. I miss traveling, seeing different people and different cultures.

Rather than a carborundum-based abrasive, try fine wire wool instead. The OOOO grade, used gently, will probably do the job.
