Would You Rent Your New Mustang Out to Pay it Off Quicker?

06/24/2015 9:38 AM

I think this is fantastic. If I owned a sports car I highly doubt I would ever rent it out. But this could be an amazing feature for Ford truck owners. I know there have many times I have needed a bigger vehicle to pick stuff up or during moving time. Now there is great incentive for the truck owner to rent out their truck to reduce over all cost of ownership to them. You will inevitably see signs in many front yards saying truck for rent call xxx-xxxx. Anyone else find this interesting?

One cannot shift a load of stuff in a Mustang, though, unlike a truck.

I have doubts about what the insurance companies are going to say about random drivers using a private party's vehicle without requiring the user to have insurance that covers a 100% walk away from the vehicle in case of an accident.

This is more than lending out your truck to a friend for them to move a couch! You're profiting from the extracurricular use of your PERSONAL vehicle!

The owner will bear the extra costs of the FULL COVERAGE insurance and probably a surcharge due to the fact that random people will be using your vehicle, WHENEVER!

What about when the person that is using your truck or Shelby Mustang KOR has a few cold ones and kills a family of 6 in a mini van. WHAT NOW?

It is your vehicle and you let them (for a fee) use your vehicle.

I see a very rich lawyer getting even richer!

GA from me. Insurance is the kicker, and I think you would find out the cost of adding "casual" drivers would likely outway the return you would get on a rental, unless of course you had a "rental" policy of a substantial "deposit", but I think by the time you figure out what that deposit should be,,, just to CYA,,, the renters could probably afford to buy their own vehicle.

I think you're 100% correct in that.

Oh, look. A non-starter.

Anybody who has rented a car might have noticed that lots of times there is low mileage on the odometer, but the car is much more worse for wear than your private vehicle. People aren't easy on rental vehicles and there is something about multiple drivers with different driving styles that seems to wear a car out sooner. I would not consider renting my private vehicle.

The only way this works is if you have a Cavalier, then you might possibly get somebody to fix it for free being stranded on the road someplace....and the downside is,,,,well there is no downside....

And the only way you can get parts for a Cavalier is to follow another one around and pick them up off the roadway!

People don't take the same care of things they rent as they would things they own. In the return of a vehicle some of this damage is not evident in a simple walk around. So Unless they are willing to pay an amount on a rental that would allow a return that possibly pay for a replacement in 4 years not going to last long. It may reduce their cost of ownership or it may not.

You still can get 2 tons in the bed of a 1/2 ton pick up.

I'm not really of the rent my stuff out mind set. Either you can borrow my stuff or you can't.

Now as for me using other people's stuff well it seems that some people insist that I should borrow their stuff being they have figured out that when I use something that is not mine it's very likely to come back in better shape than it left.

"they have figured out that when I use something that is not mine it's very likely to come back in better shape than it left."

In other words, they've realized that you are a gentleman/good neighbor/decent human being. That is commendable, and I feel like I owe you a beer (at least) for your troubles.

Now the question is, are these people inspired enough by you that try and emulate you, returning things THEY borrow in the same condition, if not better. That, my friend, would be the real Christmas Miracle: good manners and responsible behavior spreading like a contagion through the masses.

Some yes some no. The worst offence I have had was my flatbed trailer disappeared for a few days and then came back with 3 of the 4 tires not matching what it had the last time I had used it. The original tires weren't new or in great shape but they were at least rated for the loads that that trailer could carry.

The three odd ones were all different and all old low load capacity passenger car tires.

After that it got four brand new heavy load rated tires and everyone who has used it got a fair warning that it had better come back with four new matching heavy load rated tires. So far so good.

It only applies to Ford trucks right?

Not interested.

In neither of both.

In general if I can not afford my sports car I would not buy one in the first place.

If I don't have a sports car I do not automatically own a truck either.

Nowadays you can get a car plus driver by tapping your mobile phone, use an app, hire a truck the normal way or ask a friend.

Whats wrong with having friends.

Really.

Whats wrong in this world?

I think its BS.

Heck, I have a 2009 Toyota transposlug, a military five-ton truck (No one has been able to kill it in 19000 miles since 1971!), a Harley-Davidson® motorcycle, and a Jaguar XJ-12, among others. Anyone on this list who is properly licensed can rent anything but the Jaguar; those who can manage a sufficient cash or real property deposit can also rent the Jaguar. The daily rates depend upon my impression of your reliability, responsibility, dependability, and your fear of death/dismemberment/mutilation. If you pass my [highly subjective] analysis by personal interview, you may use my vehicle(s) for one day; if a longer rental period is desired, return to me after one day and we will renegotiate the terms.

I think you understand the real issues her better than most. Some people are trustworthy, and some are idiots, and it's up to you to sort them out. If you approach this sort of thing from a quasi-socialist ideological perspective, you'll end up unhappy and disillusioned, or else desperately clinging to your ideology despite evidence to the contrary.

Thread seems to have deviated from the title a bit.

However, some form of "Uber" app for personally owned utility vehicles could catch on.

Vehicle owner still drives, it's just the vehicle's capability that is rented out.

I don't think that renting a sports car with the owner still driving it will be very popular. (unless you are possibly female and showing off your "boyfriend's" wealth.... a fella can rent a female passenger to sit in his Mustang for similar reasons)

"a fella can rent a female passenger to sit in his Mustang for similar reasons"

Just make sure all the details are ironed out and written down in advance, just so that there is no confusion if Officer Friendly stops by with some questions.

I'm not saying that 'rent a passenger' isn't legit, just that an outside observer with an incomplete picture could misinterpret things.

That's what brothers-in-law are for! I'd much rather have a brother-in-law with a swimming pool than own one myself. The same goes for trucks. Of course, I always return it extra clean and with a full tank of gas.

Fantastic, I doubt. I think I probably speak (no offense intended anyone) for quite a few of us that are a little longer in the tooth. If you don't have your finances in good enough shape to make the purchase outright- cash deal - you don't need the vehicle, whatever it is. Except, of course(tongue in cheek) you follow other posters "advice" and get a Cavalier. (just had to add one more to the Cavalier string)√0
