The Leap Second Is Coming!

06/30/2015 8:38 AM

Days are actually getting longer and we finally have more time to accomplish items on that to-do list. Well actually we will only be getting one second extra today so don't get your hopes up. Just before 8:00 pm EST there will be an extra second added to the day to account for the earth's slowing rotation.

Take a look at why we need this extra second here:

We posted the same topic at almost the same time! Must be taking advantage of that extra second.

Here are the links I was sharing:

Well, DRAT!

That means that I'll have to set all of my clocks back by a second tonight.

I'm not even sure how to do that to my digital clocks.

<...not even sure how to do that to...digital clocks...>

One could always get a second opinion. ;-)

I do believe that there is a good reason for a leap second to be added but I've yet to hear or read one. I recognize that there are many chaotic factors that cause the rotation of the Earth to change enough that our clocks no longer precisely align with the cosmos. This will certainly be a critical factor for astronomers, satellite and space probe controllers and anybody else that correlates information with the cosmos. Unlike the days lost in moving from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar, this second will be difficult to notice for most people.

If anyone can provide a link that explains how this time correction prevents even an annoyance of a problem from happening, I would love to read why we are bothering to add a second.

The second used to be defined as 1/86400 of a mean solar day. Since the earth's rotation isn't constant, it was redefined as:

"9 192 631 770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state of the cesium 133 atom."

Once they solve global warming, the next item on the agenda is to stabilize the earth's rotation.

A mine on the shore.... must be a sand mine.

Breaking News; It's Y2K all over again! The grids are going down and Technology is crashing You better get your comments in while you can

" Mother Nature tells Chicken Little, " The sky is not falling ... my water is rising from that extra second they just added because I'm getting older and slower. Now, I'm getting more sun and your moving to higher ground to keep your toes dry.

Back in the days when we used to manually synchronize computers across dedicated satellite networks, we would see who could precisely hold the delay sync button down for the necessary one second for the leap.

We only had to synchronize the clock cycles to the nearest 30 mS...the CPU ran at 20kHz.
