Sorry, but that is like asking "how do I get to the store?" There are many several ways.

For your question, some of the ways are:

Paper and pencil or pen

Use a calculator

Model it and let the computer figure it out

Look it up online

Ask the material supplier

And many more.

If you provided a dimensional picture, someone here would probably be nice enough to do it for you. But if you really want to know, you should get a "Mechanics of Materials" book from a local library and learn how to do it yourself.

Thanks, but I was looking for charts on standard shapes that show the sectional properties such as Sx, Ix, A, #/ft, etc. I had purchased software that had this but when I had to change computers from Win XP to Win 7, it would not work anymore. I have not heard from the people I bot the software from.

Ok... first define 'light gage' Are we talking Cold Formed ERW Carbon Steel HSS like a 3/8" square x 20 gage?

Also, even though your original software doesn't work anymore... let us know what it is (Name, Who Made it, etc.) We might be able to point you in a direction for a suitable alternative.

1. Example: 12x3.5Cx10G = 12" tall, 3.5" flanges, C shape with 1" lips, 10 gage thickness.

2. LGSI Design Handbook (Light Gage Structural Institute) on CD, for purlins & girts, by Loseke Technologies. The software did not allow the downloading of data.

I am in the process of designing a horse barn.

You can obtain such sectional properties from the manufacturer's ENGINEERING catalogs, like Marino Industries (and others) publishes. most have an online presence as well where you can obtain such data.

Thx Captain, for a comparable member Marino's has slightly smaller S & I, I assume because their sheet is slightly thinner. Anyway muchas gracias!

You're very welcome. Marino's sections may be thinner than other manufacturers possibly because they are using a higher Yield Stress material? You'll have to compare between them and the other manufacturers, and there are many others out there. FYI, most manufacturers conform to the ANSI standards for Cold Formed Steel Sections. some do not, so be careful out there!

Just preform a Google Search and you shall find what you are looking for.

I only provided the Marino catalog cut, because that's what I've been using for years and years. They are the industry leader for CSS manufacture. They also have a great track record with Technical Support!

Usually in the various suppliers' technical sales publications.
