As ion exchange on an industrial scale normally takes place within closed vessels, a qualitiative measure such as colour is less likely to appeal than a quantitative one: ion exchange resin normally indicates its exhaustion with a rise in conductivity at the vessel outlet, as measured with a suitable instrument. This signal is used to trigger its placement into a backwash queue at an appropriate point in the control system.
