How Fit Do You Need To Be For Rig Welding ?

Hi, I am a welder with 9 years of experience with a construction company. I recently upgrade my welding qualification to (http://www.weldtechtraining.com/welding-courses/specialized-courses/weld-quality-control-inspection ) welding quality control from a reputed welding school. I would like to work in an oil rig with my upgraded qualification (i'm not sure of it). Will this qualification be beneficial in an oil rig? And I know working in an oil rig is physically demanding and what are the fitness criteria that I need to pass to work in an oil rig?

I have been working in the oils field here in North Dakota and as far as fitness goes they are far more concerned about if you can pass random drug tests, area legal resident of the US and will show up on time for your shift every day than whether or not your health is perfect.

As far as general fitness goes if you can pass the general physical and fitness tests and handle being lightly to moderately active for 12 - 14 hours a day most days you're good to go and even if you do have some degree of physical disability as long as its medically documented and signed off as being a real issue very few oil field companies will make much of a fuss about it.

I worked with a number of guys who had medical releases and no one had any problem with them. One guy I knew was missing a hand, lots of "hey guys can someone lend me hand. Im missing mine." jokes that got old though, and I think there were several guys missing a foot or part of a leg that had prosthetics and non one ever made a fuss about it.

To be honest I have back problems and I made it clear to my employers that I can not do heavy lifting for extended periods and it was never an issue. The only thing they asked of me was that I didn't do something stupid and if I ever needed help with anything to just ask someone to help me. Spending an extra 10 -15 minutes getting an extra person Vs having to fill out paperwork and pay for an on the job injury was far more of a concern than working smarter.

I would rather be inspecting the work rather than doing the work and being inspected. But that is just me. I was a CWI but the travel was just too much.
