USAF Tests Bulletproof Ceramic Material

The U.S. Air Force may replace conventional bulletproof glass with aluminum oxynitride, a ceraminc compound that has optical and structural properties similar to sapphire. During recent tests, the material withstood armor-piercing rounds fired from a .30 caliber Russian M44 sniper rifle and a .50 caliber Browning sniper rifle.
