Differences Between Switchgears and Switchboards

07/21/2015 9:52 AM

Hi Here in europe and middle east, we do not make any difference between switchgears and switchboards. However, I do beleive that a big difference between them exist in US standards. Was wondering if anyone can help me clearing the difference between such two items. Is MCC considered as switchboard? Thanking u in advance.

"Is MCC considered as switchboard?" No.

Switchboards in the USA are normally mounted on a wall or in a cabinet/enclosure and consist of Medium Voltage and/or Low Voltage molded-case breakers and/or small control switches. Circuit protection in switchboards is normally provided by each individual circuit breaker.

Switchgear on the other hand consists of free-standing Medium Voltage and/or High Voltage large circuit breakers and/or large contactors. Circuit protection is provided by a combination of protective relaying and metering that is external to the breaker/contactor.

"Switchgear", IMHO, is a collective noun and encompasses all devices which do switching. "Switchgears" should be wrong. As does the word "Controlgear" cover contactors and such. In general, anything that ends with "...gear" (headgear, smartgear...etc) is collective I believe. Is my thinking right?
