We first used carbon fiber in reinforced concrete strengthening about 12 years ago. Its ultimate tensile strength and Young's Modulus were about the same as prestressing strand (2 and 200 GPa, resp.). It is an impressive material for the structural engineer, allowing us to do some feats that a generation ago were beyond reach.

The main drawbacks in reinforced concrete applications are the limited bond strength/modulus of adhesives and fire/heat intolerance for surface mount, some alkalinity vulnerability, unforgiving cross fiber shear weakness and lack of ductility. I can foresee wind machine builders being among the first to use the 5+ GPa material in their FRP blades.
