BOS refers to the Balance Of System when referring to a Photo Voltaic installation. It is simply a term to encompass all of the other items of equipment and labour included in the installation with the exception of the actual physical solar panels themselves. For grid tied systems it includes the inverter and grid connection gear on the AC side.

It is generally used in the costing process as those ancillary items can cost as much, if not more, than the array.

There is a company near me selling combiner boxes and other appurtenances for PV systems, they call themselves SolarBOS. Pretty clever name actually, but some people ASSumed it was Solar Boss and they got feedback that their name seemed arrogant. What that really meant was that these people making the comments were ignorant....

Some thoughts:

  • There are wonderful tools such as acronym finders on the web. Google will find them. All one has to do is enter BOS into the search box and a load of possible meanings come out. If none is applicable, the facility exists to add ones that have occurred since the acronym finder's last update. One could also try PV and see if that one is there too, perhaps?
  • One could always ask the originator of the document to define the alphabet soup thereon?
  • BOS is SOB backwards.
  • BOS could be a typo for POS.
