Most of the time via the AV port. It all depends on what your TV has for a connector.

Just that? There is converters that transforms todays digital data into analog signal for the antenna port. I think a newer TV is less expensive plus offers a better quality than whatever solution you will get offered here.

How old is old for that TV? Still black and white? Color TV not even a SCART port or VGA or SVGA?

Because no modern equipment can connect to it?

Those old sets that got a great picture from the DuMont Network can still give a good picture, if anybody would broadcast a compatible signal on DuMont's frequency again. But they wont, so the sets stay dark.

What you need is an RF modulator. A device that takes composite video (with sounds) and modulates a tiny transmitter on one of several channels.

You need the correct type. If your TV is NTSC, PAL, or SECAM input

RF Modulator

Use a VCR. Might as well keep with the times. Someone will pay you to take away their VHS recorder. The nice thing is that there will be AV inputs and it has the modulator so as long as your TV tunes to Ch3 or Ch4, you've got it made in the shade.

Do I need a HDMI input if I need to use a Chrome Cast or something to that effect?

The ChromeCast things that I have seen plug into an HDMI port, so if you want to stream wirelessly, you will need a DVD player that has an HDMI input that will output to the A/V ports on the VCR or some similar device to get it into the analog NTSC format of your TV.

Good luck with your quest.

Why bother?

It will probably cost more in time wasted (assuming you value your time reasonably!) than buying a modern new or secondhand TV with all the right connections....better picture too if you shop carefully!!

The interface might be quite cheap to buy on ebay (though I really have no idea!), but you need to box it up, get a power supply and and and.....

You could make something and the very next day the TV tube goes......so do remember to junk all your work with the useless TV!!

Always remember, "ROI"........

"Always remember, "ROI"........"

Not everything is measured in Dollars and cents. Er, Deuchmarks. Oops, Euros.

Sometimes the return is 'Knowledge/Experience." He's learning a fortune about how audiovisual equipment hooks up to each other. Let him keep asking his questions, the Insight will come to him soon enough, and then he'll shout "I need a towel!(1)"

Notes:

  1. That's what 'Eureka' means, right? From the context, a wet, naked Greek running down the street, it would seem like getting a towel would be the foremost thing on his mind, for several reasons.

And the knowledge we've been trying to pass along is "Sometimes equipment just becomes obsolete, and cannot be easily made compatible with the new standards."

You can't fit an 8-Track cassette in a CD player, You can't watch anything on a DuMont TV, and analog NTSC TVs are rapidly losing their relevance in the modern world.

Since you ask about streaming, I assume you have internet access. Do you have wireless? If so, buy a Roku box. You can find them for about $100 US or less. They connect to the internet via your wireless and to your TV via coax cable.

I've used one for 2 or 3 years and have enjoyed it. Like you, I don't see any reason to get rid of a perfectly functioning analog TV.

I've only had one problem. You can watch YouTube videos on your TV via the Roku and control the playback thru your laptop or phone. First, however, you must "pair" your laptop by entering a number displayed by Roku on your TV screen. A few months ago, Roku updated its system software, and now the number generated is too small to read. When I emailed the Roku customer service people about it, the response was to "Use the TV zoom function to enlarge the print". Digital answer for my hybrid system. Someday I will write back and ask them how to find the zoom function on my old TV set.

Please note that I can still watch YouTube videos. I just have to use the clumsier Roku interface instead of the more friendly interface on my laptop.
