Speed Governer in Steam Turbine

08/11/2015 7:15 AM

Could someone please explain to me the theory of operation of the hydraulic speed governer in a steam turbine???

cause my only understanding is the mechanical one which is connected to the turbine shaft and having those flyballs which with the governer can actuates the lever to open and close the governer inlet steam valve.

thanks in advance

You might want to check out some pictures which do explain sometimes better how things work:

Check the Image tab and have a scroll through.

Have fun!

Also check out Woodward governors; there are now electronic governors that replace the older flyweight designs.

There should be a manual that explains that. If it has been lost, try contacting Woodward for a replacement.

This might be a little bit off-topic, but it's potentially critically important...

In addition to a speed-control device, a trip & throttle valve is generally required on big turbines. This is a critical safety device, designed to rapidly cut the steam supply off in the event of a runaway overspeed event or loss of lube oil pressure.

Theory = make the go fast not go so fast.

Recommend not using this piece of machinery until your knowledge and understanding are equal to the task.
