More MIT Fusion Reactor

08/18/2015 11:29 AM

http://www.iflscience.com/physics/lets-all-get-cautiously-excited-about-fusion-power-breakthroughwill new superconducting magnets actually bring the promise to life?ARC reactor designed to have 500 MW fusion power at 3.3 m major radius.

Compact, simplified design allowed by high magnetic fields and jointed magnets.

ARC has innovative plasma physics solutions such as inboardside RF launch.

High temperature superconductors allow high magnetic fields and jointed magnets.

Liquid immersion blanket and jointed magnets greatly simplify tokamak reactor design.

What's this "nearly infinite" BS? Large, maybe.

Infinite amounts of energy may indeed cause global warming....

I will believe it when I see it.

Not surprisingly, I am not clear on the concept of structurally supporting these magnets. Are the fields balanced?

from what I've read the team @ the Skunkworks has over 200" test shots" of igniting small amounts of fuel and containing the reaction within their "magnetic bottle". it sounds more plausible to me all the time. the reaction temp is over 100 million degrees. that can boil a LOT of water...steam has been turning turbines for centuries...we aren't gonna run out of seawater for fuel anytime soon. I have my skepticism but I'm a true believer in science tech and risk taking.

If there only half a dozen fused hydrogen atoms, even at 100 million degrees they aren't going to boil much water. That big herky number doesn't mean much of anything by itself.

I favor fusion, which may someday be mastered in a controlled way. However, there has been much fraud, hype, incorrect concepts, and faulty arithmetic on this topic.

Exciting yes. Superconductors have been around for at least 30 years. Maybe it reqired a higher temperature superconductor?

plasma physics is a rather new field, no one is expert in it just yet
