Pneumatic system design info...

07/19/2007 9:10 AM

Hello to all. I am in need of information regarding the selection of pipe, hose and adapters to install compressed air rings, compressed air manifolds, condensate trapping, the works. I would also need to know about hoses and the do´s and dont´s of installation. This is for an industrial plant compressed air distribution system. Can anyone help?

CP, Consolidated Pneumatic provide a system design guide with each of their air tools. It provides everything you ask for.

Be wary of manufacturers volume /pressure figures. for small shops/home supplies 10 CFM is good. for factories obviously you need bigger. However soem compressor manufactureres, particularly chinese ones, quote CFM figures at 1 atmospheres (same pessure as air going into machine). you need to ensure the CFM figures are at line pressure, normally around 100psi. and don't forget to factor filters, water seperators, oilers etc in when calculating.

A good test of capacity tis to run either large spray guns or air grinders. these use copious quantities of air. If the system isn't big enough you will notice the pressure drop across time.

Finally, if you are building the compressor unit; you must provide a pressure relief valve on the pump so it isn't starting under load. Otherwise you will keep melting motors and fuses! siting is important too, find a cool, shady place with plenty of cool or cold air that is as dry as possible. I try to place the inlets under buildings where possible and keep teh pipework as low as possible, away from the hot roof zone. Insulation is good if you can afford it. So are autodrains!

Visit www.about-air-compressors.com . The site has tons of information about compressed air systems, and you can email the publisher for more data if what you want can't be found.
