Will This Car Put Nails into Detroit's Coffin?

08/24/2015 10:10 AM

this is the much anticipated Tesla model X. not as sporty or expensive as the famous Model S. will the market embrace it and send Tesla to new heights or will it follow the Edsel into history?http://www.valuewalk.com/2015/08/tesla-making-preparations-for-model-x-release/

So what happens when the subsidies and tax breaks end? And should the government be giving help to the already wealthy?

Tesla took a huge loan out and paid Uncle Sam back.......unlike the billions that were flushed to keep union workers in a job at GM. the tech is quite sound, the refueling stations are the weak link

Well frankly I don't think you could get another nail into that coffin....having said that there are good points about the X and bad points just like any vehicle....first it weighs a ton, 2.5 tons to be more precise, it has a laptop size screen on the console, looks fragile, the doors are cool, 3rd row seats useless, and like all electric cars demands a plug in where ever you intend to park it, which almost has to be a garage I would think...

I would much rather have a roomy backseat, than a cramped space such as that...

The gull wing rear doors look awkward and unwieldy...and the price, wealthy status symbol of the politically correct dogooder's...

okay you see an Edsel then. I'm not so sure, if a plan is launched to increase charging points it could be a winner, the public will vote with their wallets. the current charging model has a lots of holes in it...too much hassle, gas cars are easy and familiar

What they need is a good autocharger....

Yeah, you pull in, it beeps when you are in range, it automatically connects and charges the car up......disconnects with your fob...

I'm waiting for supercap technology to come out. It would allow quick charges, less weight.

...super capacitors are already used in some, if not all EV's, for high momentary power demand,...they are charged with the battery pack and/or braking action energy recovery system, at a rate that reduces the stress on the batteries, increasing the life of the battery pack....

Probably an appropriate diagrammatic representation but I'm not sure I'd trust a reference that can't spell "supercapacitor" correctly.

I'll wait for the 'Marty McFly' model, with "Flux-gate Capacitor" technology, before getting interested (wink, wink).

I think Detroit will nail its own coffin shut while suckling at the teet of the oil companies.

The Type X is hoping to take approximately 8 to 12% out of the high end SUV market.

The real killer is due out in late 2017, the type E or 3 (depending on the source) that will be comparable to a Chevy Impala / Ford Fusion price range with a 300 mile real world range.

I have heard that if you play poker with Elon you might not want to play for money. LOL

Considering the DOW lately, I doubt the Tesla will make it. The economy as is will generally do more to dictate which companies will sing their death knell than new technology will. If the economy does as predicted by some of the doom and gloomers, there may be a lot of companies in question.

I fear that it will be the markets that put the nail in Tesla's coffin. First we have the oil market which is crushing the need for any real alternative to oil. Second is the stock market that is draining cash out of peoples' pockets faster than the IRS can. Third we have the interest rate market that will put a real damper on any cheap financing deals for capital expenditures and automobile purchases. Fourth we have the government meddling in markets by offering "now you have them, now you don't" subsidies for things like electric vehicles, gasohol, solar power, imported goods, etc. etc.

I fear that as smart as Elon is, he's no better than China at creating/manipulating markets, since in the final analysis no man, company, or government is able to fully comprehend/control the amorphous, ephemeral, finicky, and/or bullying world wide marketplace; which does what it wants, where it wants, whenever it wants to.
