Is There a Hybrid On-Off/Momentary Switch?

09/02/2015 4:49 PM

Is there a type of normally open momentary switch that stays closed if you click it quickly and lift your finger, and also stays closed if you keep it pressed and opens when you release? Example: a talkback system, press and keep pressed (the music dims), talk, release (the music comes back up). Also: click quickly lifting thumb (music dims), talk, click again quickly lifting thumb(music comes back up).

Probably not.

Perhaps if you describe the functions in terms of the switch functions, open/close.

"click quickly lifting thumb" Is not a term usually associated with a button press.

How much does the music "dim"? What is "talk"? Dimming and talking?

Maybe you can draw a schematic?

There are many on-off-on toggle switches for no or nc applications....

These types of functions are normally achieved by software.

Sounds like you are looking for the functionality similar to that found on the 'drivers side electric windows'.

As gringogreg said, that is usually done with software (or alternately via relay logic).

You need a momentary pushbutton switch, and either a full-blown PLC or one of the many cut-down versions on the market - sometimes called "logic relays" (e.g. Siemens Logo, Telemecanique Zelio etc. (many of which are the same animal badged up by different manufacturers)).

Then you could program various responses of bright/dim lights, loud/soft music etc. for whatever duration button-presses you want.

Thank you all very much for your responses, deeply appreciated. A talkback system is an audio console tool used for communicating with the musicians from the control room to the tracking studio. Most of the mixing consoles have a button you press when you want to speak (talk). There are two ways to engage: A-Clicking once to close the circuit. This dims the program (music) being processed, and clicking again once you're done. The program comes back up. B-Pressing and staying down while you talk(speak) and releasing when you are done. Most of the switches that come with these mixers have both attributes, but I haven't been able to find a loose one that does. I am now leaning towards the belief that this is a software feature and starting to research in that direction. Thank you all very much for such a considerate attention.

Correct, the functionality can be implemented in the software of a microcontroller or using the 555 timer chip.

In either case the closure of a spring-return momentary-contact switch starts a timing cycle which holds a relay closed if the switch contacts are closed for a short duration, then releases it when the second short duration push is sensed. If the button is held down for a long duration then the timing circuit senses that and the relay stays closed until the button is released. I used the term "relay" generically to indicate a command to do something like close or open a contact, turn a transistor switch on or off, tell another program to perform a function, etc.

Thank you both for your responses. More design options/solutions. Yes. That one is one of the popular choices for headphone units. Many personal systems don't use mixers anymore, just sophisticated preamps for specific needs. A unit like this will add headphone management and communication with the people in the tracking room.

Yes, Look at Allied Electronics. They have lots of switches.

Yes there "push-to-close" - "push-to-open" switches available that could be adapted to meet most of your listed requirements.

I would search for "latching microswitches" or on the above terminology and if not successful call some of the switch manufacturers to find out if they have anything available.

You could also use a miniature PLC and write a simple program to do whatever required pretty easily.
