Failure of 25 kva Capacitor

09/12/2015 12:56 AM

Recently there was a failure of 25 kva capacitor in our plant due to short circuiting of cables.Would like to know the measures and precautions to be taken to avoid repetition of such type of problems.

  • Physical separation of conductors
  • Insulating barrier between conductors
  • Physical protection against damage to insulation
  • Shrouding or other protection of exposed conductors to avoid the possibility of short-circuit by conductive objects that shouldn't be there (such as dropped tools or drones).

That's a start.

Do you mean the capacitor was destroyed by the cable shorts?

As others suggest proper quenching fuses would help, as well as structural changes that limit the possibility of cable shorts happening again through proper aerial cable laying to prevent wind excursions, and annual inspections of HV cable ways(if any) to ensure insulation integrity

Should have a properly sized fuse... provided in table in below link...

Make sure you dont have loose connection within your circuit. You must use standard insulators.Dont take shortcuts.

I don't think that by merely making a suggestion of what type of insulator can remedy your situation that can provide an accurate result without knowing several things:

1. What caused the previous failure.

2. Where and how is the device installed and constructed.

3. Under what conditions does the device operate under.

4. The supply and service cables routing, installation, requirements, etc.

I get quite a few phone calls from people asking for a quoted price to repair their evaporation coolers, I tell them that I need to see the location and installation in order to provide an accurate diagnosis and to provide an estimate to return their system to normal operating condition.

In addition to all other suggestions, you are requested to conduct Power Quality study, specially harmonics content and voltage fluctuations, voltage spikes etc.in your power system to mitigate the problem.
