Portable Workshop in a Suitcase

09/19/2015 2:52 AM

I have come across few companies manufacturing set of tools in a box with price up to USD 500. I feel some vital items are excluded in those packages. Please shed your opinion/expertise on howmany boxes and what items should be included for a complete toll kit. In my opinion there should be a stand to hold portable drill machine(mains or Li-ion battery powered, with many attachments, pipe thread cutter, cutting fluid, cutting blade, small grinding wheel,cleaning/polishing wire brush, hole cutter, small pipe bending machine, saw to cut angle iron, pipes, sheet metal, small bars, measuring aligning tools, tapes, electrical tools, multimeter, power tester, flash light, foldable PV array to charge Li-ion battery, soldering, brazing, cutting torches-gas operated, electric arc welder for small electrodes and transformer or 24V battery, spirit level, try square,micrometer,caliper,hand/electric gloves,bench/pipe vice, few carpenter's tools and so on with a tent and four telescopic poles. If number of items are too much we have the option to segregate to put in 2 or 3 boxes. If possible indicate approximate cost of total package.

This very handy for technicians and contractors working in sites far away from base workshop. You may added special tools, spanners etc when required.

You need to add up the volumes of all those items, and then compare it to the volume of a suitcase. That stuff would more than fill a "gang box" of 750 x 750 x 1200 mm, and it would cost way more than US$5000, let alone $500.

we can classify boxes as electrical, woodworking, metal working, pipe work etc and fix prices for each for customer to choose.

What you are requesting is not going to fit in a "suitcase", at least not anything that could be carried by hand to a job site. All this would require a truck.

Actually, at least in the US, many tradesmen employ custom built truck bodies that can carry and organize their tools and supplies required at a job site.

That said, I would love to devise a "suitcase" that would incorporate the tools that I normally require for servicing electronic machine controls. Such a kit would incorporate a computer, with an PC o-scope and DMM, Connections and storage for the necessary probes and PLC interface cables, and an organised storage of the small electronic service tools, such as screw drivers, pliers, wire tools, soldering iron, and storage for a small selection of crimp-on wire terminals. All this with a single AC power connection.

According to the job he should select the appropriate suitcase-workshop,carpentry, electrical, automobile, pipe work, general tools etc and load it in his mobike or pickup truck to site.

What you are describing is a smaller version of this

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunderbird_2_pod_vehicles

The problem is the more complete you make the kit the bigger the kit becomes. Commonly contractors down here have whole minivans set up for each of these specific mobile workshop tasks, not just a large suit case.

An alternative would likely be a task-specific trailer loaded with the gear. Grab a vehicle, connect the appropriate trailer and away you go. You can deck it out with pod numbers too if you like.
