Possibly lightning. Possibly lack of maintenance.

Can you supply any further information and photos?

Operator incompetence comes to mind.

Was it an arc flash?

Were you injured?

Normally an open circuit CT is the reason for the burst . An insulation failure due possible high voltage in open circuit CT .

Most likely due to inadvertent open circuiting of the CT secondary.

Possible causes:

Loose connection(s) in CT secondary circuit at CT, CT circuit terminal strip(s), and/or metering Test Switch.

Incorrect troubleshooting or installation method by inexperienced technician/person.

Bad/failed ammeter switch contacts.

Bad/failed meter.

Loose screw(s) in/on terminal strip(s) in CT secondary circuit.

Incorrect wiring in CT and/or metering circuit.

Poor crimp and/or failure of wire terminal.

End of CT winding insulation life. (Not likely but possible.)

BE CAREFUL!! OPEN CIRCUITING ANY CT CIRCUIT WHEN ENERGIZED CAN BE FATAL!

It was probably because either the current through it or the voltage it experienced was more than it could withstand, Mildred.

Monkeys, with no chance of being chastised, may have chewed through the CT circuit.

Can hrk provide additional information?

  • Weather conditions at approximate time of burst?
  • Electrical load at time of burst?
  • Scheduled/unscheduled maintenance going on a time of burst?
  • Photographs of burst CT?
  • Stated rating of burst CT?

With so little information in the original post, all that can be supplied is extremely general information, and sarcasm. Sarcasm is always supplied free of charge, so do not be shy about asking for a second serving if desired.
