What is the Best Software for Signal Acquisition and Processing?

10/13/2015 8:54 AM

I'll be doing a project that will need to acquire and process signals coming from one or two antennas. What is, in your opinion, the best software to do this? I've used LabView before and it worked alright but it was a very simple project, this one is much more complex. Is LabView a good option? Are there better options?

Thank you.

LabView is a defacto standard solution, because usually if you are gathering data like that, you are going to do some analysis at least and likely take action on it, which is really what LabView is. But if you are only gathering the data, I agree, it's overkill. I've seen some lower functioning DAQ software packages come and go, but the problem with cheap or free software is longevity; how can you continue to support something that makes you no money?

But that's likely what you are looking for, DAQ (Data AQuisition) software. Do a search for that term. By the way, National Instruments, who makes LabView, offers less functional DAQ packages too, then if you want to import it to LabView later, it's ready.

The best software is the software you already understand and that you understand meets all of the criteria of your project.

Having said that, I find LabView is an above average software platform for using National Instruments hardware. If you are using other hardware than National Instruments, LabView does support a lot of third party systems but any driver mismatch or other complication to implement may become awkward.

My point here is that there is a lot of other factors (hardware, acquisition rate, post acquisition processing, output format, budget, what makes this a more complex process, etc.) you are paid to know about that we don't know about. These unknowns may make LabView an ideal software platform. The complexity of the analysis might require MatLab, Mathmatica or Maple the analysis programs you should use. You might even find the need to maximize the speed of your hardware acquisition is so critical that only a real time assembly language or C coding of an embedded processor will work for spewing out data to other machines in a timely fashion.

Purchase even a second or surplus oscilloscope with pc inter phase. It will work.

There are many different options and which one is best depends on the hardware you are using, what kind of signal processing you need personal preference. Labview is commonly used and could be a good option, especially if your hardware has good Labview drivers and and you can use the built-in functions in Labview/toolboxes to to do the signal processing. Other options include Matlab with the instrument control/data acquisition toolbox and Python.
