Chilled Water System for High-Rise Building

10/15/2015 6:39 AM

In Jeddah, Saudi Arabia a sky craper of 1 KM high has been proposed to be constructed which will be the tallest building in the world. How chilled water for HVAC will be taken to such a hight and what PN standard fittings will be used?

Are you one of the designer? Probably not? We only talk to designer.

Ahm, you have to make adjustment of course with open system, for closed system it does not matter.

Ummm... Maybe you do, but most all of us will discuss a question with anyone regardless of who or what they are!

You certainly don't get the idea of that punch line OM. Reality is a comic relief. Sometimes, consultant goes and get advice from a forum.

They probably use standard fittings and booster pumps every 20 or so floors.

I don't understand why one would bring chilled water to a building this tall. Won't it be easier to chill the water in the outside air found at the top of the building than the hot air at ground level. Lift pumps at multiple intermediate floors will certainly be needed to raise all water for the operation of this building.

Usual design is per zone (composed of several levels per set of AHUs, FCU's and Chiller unit) just like how fire water systems is designed.

Only minimal feed water is needed commonly source from cold water supply system from that zone (in tanks) which are also arrange serving several level in a zone. Chilled water is treated water and cycled.

When power management and monitoring is an issue, design is optimum in arrangement per zone(levels). This is maintenance wise, convenience and economy.

Best location of chillers should be above served zone levels(gravity supported feed to FCUs and AHU downstream since cool water is heavier than hot or return water)

Spend some of the millions of dollars your company is.making on this project and hire a consultant.

They will want some actual details, which you have failed.to supply to the forum.

Free advice is worth what it costs.

Padman,

You have asked this question before. Did you not keep your notes?

You have asked many similar questions in the past, all indicating that you can't do your job.

So, you come here in hopes that the forum will do it for you.

You seem to be lacking any knowledge of your job and business ethics.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe your historical record will support my statement.

An item that was missed in the design phase of a (much shorter) system in the Crocker Bank 56 story building is the weight on the bottom of the risers. At Crocker, they were supported from the 90 degree fitting at the bottom. When a similar system back east was filled, the fitting collapsed. One nice overtime night for two guys reinforced it adequately. In short, pipe supports for the risers can be a major pitfall.

Pumps and pipes

or

A bucket brigade lifting buckets of ice up the exterior walls. 1 km ropes hung from the roof will be required for this. By the time the ice gets up to the top of the building it will have melted and you will have cold (chilled) water for the hvac.

Good Luck, Old Salt

I can't see the point of building a " worlds tallest building " in Saudi Arabia.

It's not like they got a shortage of usable land.

Maybe they should build " the world's longest building "

Then they will only need to pump chilled water up 1 story.
