Philanthropy

10/16/2015 6:05 PM

I watched the "Billion thread" twice. it was interesting but the hype and self promotion didn't quite add up. Bill Gates isn't my fav guy but I think his efforts to affect change in poor countries is sincere. I offer this tasty vid for your thirst

I thought it was nice. The guy is at least trying to make the world a better place rather trying to take it over and make it his own like so many ultra wealthy people do with their lives.

He's got what I saw as a far more down to earth humble and humorous mentality about his work than most people ever have. I can respect that more than I can explain.

He admits he does not always know what is or is not possible but he is willing to put for the the actual work and efforts to find out and when possible prove other wrong by accomplishing the things others said were impossible and take credit for when things fail too. That's far more than many people here ever do in a day let alone their lifetime.

Good answer! I agree, although In your last sentence I would reverse the 'day' and 'lifetime'.

And to Lyn and others, yes, I did listen to the whole thing. Notice I said listen; I did do some other stuff while not always watching.

Have not see the "Billion thread" yet, but support whatever efforts help the common cause for all. The Dalai Lama has said ... the secret to life is to be happy and helpful ... and I have added the Chinese perspective .... and rich!

Hats off to all who are philanthropist. They have proved that they are born for good of humanity.

And, the tax write-off doesn't hurt either.

Why is the same thread being posted on CR4 twice on consecutive days under different headings? For those who missed it I posted my comments yesterday in reply to "Billion in Change". My response has not changed in the last 24 hours.

Philanthropy yes. Nice to have mega $$$$$$$$ to do this kind of thing. For us "regular" people it's something else.

Anaerobic digestion does almost the same thing, and in "3rd world" countries, especially warm climate ones, it makes more sense, at least to me. Why?? In warm climates you don't need to add any outside heat to digest the sewage(usually from animals, but human waste can be digested as well).

It is relatively simple and not as costly as the one shown, which by the looks of it ran well into the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ of them.

You need:

1 - a ditch or trench to gravity feed - if not readily doable you may have to pump the s...

2 - a bladder to collect the waste

3 - an exit hose for the methane gas that is produced

4 - something to burn the methane gas - 3rd world I've seen a simple burner used for cooking. With a little treatment to get rid of the acid formed (H2S I do recall), the gas can run an internal combustion engine which can power a generator.

I've been through this and have a small scale digestive system in place for the last 8 years. Took a lot of research and quite a few $$ (but not as much as I expect the video set up did). It has been producing gas all the time which has been used to heat the farm's shop and sheds. That's another story I won't get into here.

Good luck on finding investors for any of this project, as I kind of think that the payback period will be quite extensive, long, and drug out for so long that you would have to be a philanthropist to invest. As mentioned elsewhere nice tax write off.
